CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
We often wonder if the laws in Colombia are fair,
and the truth is, it's not an easy answer. Penalties vary depending on the type
of crime and the circumstances in which it occurs.
In general, the Colombian
Penal Code attempts to establish punishments that are proportional to the harm
caused. It takes into account things like whether the crime was intentional,
whether the person has committed crimes before, and what consequences their
actions had.
But there are also problems.
For example:
Penalties for drug offenses
are sometimes too harsh, even for people who only possessed small amounts.
Meanwhile, corruption crimes,
which cause significant damage to the country, often receive light punishments
or are poorly enforced.
